The association between the Dorje (Vajra) and the Bell (Ghantā), finds its origins after the Goddess Durga received at its birth the Vajra of Indra and the bell of its elephant Airavata.
Associated with the Bell, the Vajra (male principle) symbolizes the path to follow and compassion while the Bell (female principle) symbolizes knowledge and emptiness.
The dorje, held in the right hand, represents skillful means, and the bell, held in the left, represents wisdom. Simultaneously used together during rituals, this shows how wisdom and compassion are inseparable.
